Books are a collection of pages made from paper or parchment with or without printing on the pages. A page is a piece of paper referred to a leaf, the page is one side of the leaf fixed down one side to form a hinged opening to display many pages. The pages that have printing on them are usually printed in ink.
Books are sold in bookshop or online but they can be borrowed from libraries. Books are split in to 3 main categories Fiction, Nonfiction and Reference books. Books are man’s attempt to leave a lasting record of thoughts and stories that are movable. The first drawings or writing was performed on cave walls or stone tablets. This system was a one off work that had to be viewed at the place of origin with only 1 copy, the original. The temples in early Egypt were canvases used to carve hieroglyphics the tell the story and the laws of the ruler at the time.
Early books where hand written on scrolls; again the reproduction of mass copies were unavailable. It was not until the invention of the printing press that that enabled books to become available to more people but only to the people that could read. Early hand written works were copied without protection. Scribes used to earn the money by copying other peoples work. Books or tablets have been produced on many materials.
Books have been concerned by governments and religious bodies since they have been printed. Many religious books were printed in Latin to keep the population in ignorance and oppression. The population at that time could not read or write in English so they had little chance of reading or understanding Latin. Many inventers and ground breaking people have had their book publically burned because their contradicted the governments of the day or they were to advance for governments to accept.
In 2011 google estimated that there were 130,000,000 unique titles published. Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1440 which brought the book into the industrial age. Books became available to people with money and the books could be moved about and gave great power to the people that could read them. Bring this up to date and the trend is foe electronic books that can be read on a screen, computer or mobile phone.
Top 3 counties for published books. First China 2013 440,000 new titles or re-edition. Second USA with 304,912 in 2013. Followed up by the UK with 184,000 new titles or re-editions in 2011. This has been surpassed by electronic additions which can be easily self-published on many platforms.
Digital printing has led to print runs being made more economically in small numbers so the book can now be printed on demand via computer and digital printers. This new practice makes the 2000 copy runs obsolete cutting down on storage facilities being required.
Book writing has flourished in recent years because agents and publishers are not so important to the modern author. Amazon Kindel has revolutionised the book publishing on the digital platform, but I do think standards have slipped considerably as the editor and proof reader are not so important in this age of instant publishing in digital form. The author can write and publish at will without having the work read and approved.
